DDOSC, Balik Scientist partner to Probe Microplastics in Province’s Agricultural Soils

After a strategic virtual dialogue with Davao de Oro State College President Dr. Lilybeth M. Matunhay on August 26, 2025, Dr. Marife B. Anunciado, under the Balik Scientist Program, is gearing up to launch the pioneering research on microplastics in agricultural soils in Davao de Oro.

An Environmental Scientist with over 13 years of expertise in water resources management, air quality, and plastic waste characterization, Dr. Anunciado is leading the research “Towards Understanding Our Agricultural Soils in Modern Times: Davao de Oro.”

The project will assess the presence and characteristics of plastics in rice fields, corn farms, coconut plantations, and banana farms across the province.

Partnering with the College, this research endeavor will also see Dr. Anunciado train DDOSC students in microplastic sampling and analysis to build local research capacity.

During the meeting, DDOSC President Dr. Lilybeth M. Matunhay expressed the institution’s full support for this groundbreaking initiative, highlighting that it aligns with the college’s research agenda.

“This partnership not only empowers local researchers and students with advanced scientific skills but also positions DDOSC as a key contributor to addressing pressing environmental challenges through collaborative research.”

Meanwhile, beyond the study, Dr. Anunciado envisions establishing a center for soil analysis in partnership with DDOSC, an initiative that could position the province as a hub for advanced environmental and agricultural research.

Established under Republic Act 11305, the Balik Scientist program incentivizes Filipino scientists, technologists, and experts based abroad to share their expertise toward scientific, agro-industrial, and economic development in the country.
