Nestlé Philippines Strengthens Coffee Development Initiatives in Davao de Oro
The Provincial Government of Davao de Oro, under the leadership of Hon. Raul G. Mabanglo, Governor of Davao de Oro, together with Hon. Maria Carmen Zamora-Mabanglo, 1st Congressional District Representative, warmly welcomed officials from Nestlé Philippines in a courtesy meeting aimed at strengthening partnerships for coffee development and farmer empowerment in the province.
The visit began with a courtesy meeting at the Office of the Provincial Governor in Nabunturan where Mr. Ramon Parreño, Agronomist of Nestlé Philippines Inc., presented the NESCAFÉ Plan and the Coffee Development Project in Davao de Oro, implemented in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Provincial Agriculturist’s Office (PAGRO), and Davao de Oro State College (DDOSC). He also emphasized the Competitiveness Enhancement Measures Fund (CEMF), a program that seeks to identify farmers’ associations and cooperatives in the province that can be assisted in preparing and submitting proposals to avail of grants. This initiative is seen as a vital step in improving the competitiveness of local coffee producers and strengthening the province’s agricultural economy.
After the meeting, the delegation proceeded to Angel Garden and Nursery Farm in Maragusan which allowed Nestlé representatives and provincial officials to observe firsthand the coffee-growing practices in the highland municipality, known for its favorable conditions for coffee production. The farm visit highlighted the importance of enhancing sustainable farming methods and ensuring that local farmers have access to resources, technology, and markets that will allow them to maximize the potential of coffee production in the highlands of Davao de Oro.
The activity concluded with a focus group discussion with coffee farmers in Maragusan. The dialogue provided a venue for farmers to voice their challenges and aspirations directly to Nestlé and government representatives. Training needs, technical support, and better market opportunities were among the major concerns raised, reflecting the urgent call to build stronger support systems for local coffee growers.
Through this courtesy visit, Nestlé Philippines and the Provincial Government of Davao de Oro reaffirmed their shared commitment to uplift the local coffee industry. By combining government initiatives with private sector expertise, both parties aim to position Davao de Oro as a strong player in the Philippine coffee landscape, while ensuring that farmers receive the tools, knowledge, and opportunities they need for sustainable growth and development (by Orville Evardo Jr.).
